The Democratic Senate candidate in Florida is proposing a rent freeze.
The Florida Democrat running for U.S. Senate is also proposing a moratorium on evictions in addition to a national rent freeze.
“Some of y’alls rent are too damn high! I’m calling for a National Rent Freeze, to make sure that your face doesn’t look like mine when you pay your rent each month,” Democrat Angie Nixon posted along with a social media video reacting to the percent of their paycheck people may pay for rent.
Republican Senator Ashley Moody is campaigning against Nixon by branding her a “socialist” and warning against the extreme politics. Angie Nixon did announce in her campaign she joined the Democratic Socialists. “My opponent will be a self-proclaimed socialist that proudly signed up and joined the Democratic Socialists of America. That will be my opponent,” Republican Senator Ashley Moody said in her primary victory remarks.
On housing issues, Angie Nixon is campaigning on a national rent stabilization standard, just-cause eviction protections, and the right to counsel in eviction proceedings. “Florida is getting hit the hardest, and is now the worst state in the country for renters,” the Democrat’s campaign site says. “On top of this, Florida homeowners now pay some of the highest insurance premiums in the nation.”
The Democratic candidate said she would pay for her top priorities, including a rent freeze, by taxing billionaires, stopping the spending on war overseas, and getting “big money out of politics.” Nixon’s other top priorities include Medicare for All, free childcare, free paid family and sick leave, and a universal jobs program with inflation-adjusted wages.
Republican Senator Ashley Moody is framing this Florida election as bigger than selecting a Senator, but critical to the future of the country because of the extreme differences between the candidates. “We are staring down crazy in the socialists today,” the Republican added.
