A baby was seated in a carseat when a 38-year-old man fired a gun, hitting her in the back of the head early Saturday in a Chicago Lawn home on the South Side.

The child was left in critical condition at a hospital.

Davaris Washington, 38, was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a machine gun, reckless conduct causing great bodily harm and possession of a firearm by a repeat offender, Chicago police said.

Washington was arrested around 12:15 a.m. Saturday in an apartment in the 6400 block of South Mozart Street where the girl was found shot minutes earlier, police said.

According to a police report, the baby was in the living room of the apartment seated in a car seat when Washington allegedly opened fire using a gun that was equipped with a "switch," when she was shot in the back of the head.

She was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition, officials said.

Washington is expected to appear in court Monday.
